HoneyBook doesn't work in India. Compare ClearWork vs Bonsai vs Dubsado for Indian freelancers — GST, UPI payments, INR pricing. From ₹149/mo.
By ClearWork — India's client management platform for freelancers
HoneyBook, Bonsai, and Dubsado are built for US and European freelancers — not India. None of them support GST invoicing, UPI payments, or IT Act 2000 e-sign contracts. HoneyBook is outright unavailable in India; Bonsai and Dubsado work technically but leave you without the compliance tools every Indian freelancer legally needs. ClearWork is the India-built alternative that covers all three workflows from ₹149/month.
The fundamental problem is not UI or feature count — it's infrastructure. Every global tool was designed around Stripe, PayPal, USD pricing, and Western tax law. India has a completely different stack:
GST-registered freelancers must issue invoices with the correct tax split: CGST + SGST for intra-state clients, IGST for inter-state and export. HoneyBook, Bonsai, and Dubsado have no concept of this. You'd need to calculate it manually and add free-text fields — which doesn't satisfy Rule 46 of the CGST Rules 2017 and can invalidate your client's ITC claim.
95% of B2B payments in India happen via NEFT, RTGS, or UPI. Stripe's Indian support is limited, and PayPal adds 4–5% fees on top of conversion losses. HoneyBook doesn't even support Indian bank accounts — the Stripe merchant account registration is blocked for India.
Bonsai starts at $17/month (₹1,400). Dubsado starts at $20/month (₹1,660). HoneyBook is $19/month (₹1,580). That's 9–11x the cost of ClearWork at ₹149/month — for a tool that doesn't support GST or UPI.
HoneyBook, Bonsai, and Dubsado use DocuSign or similar Western e-sign platforms. These are valid under the ESIGN Act (US) but do not explicitly comply with India's Information Technology Act 2000 Second Schedule, which requires OTP-based authentication for electronic signature validity in Indian courts.
Indian clients respond on WhatsApp, not email. All three tools send payment reminders and contract links by email only — with average open rates under 25%. ClearWork sends reminders directly via WhatsApp at 3, 7, and 14 days overdue.
Here's how all three global tools compare to ClearWork for Indian freelancers:

HoneyBook is genuinely well-designed — beautiful proposal templates, smart workflows, and an excellent client experience. It's the right tool for US-based creative freelancers: photographers, designers, and videographers who bill in USD and collect via Stripe. For anyone in India, it's simply not available — HoneyBook has not launched Stripe merchant accounts for Indian bank accounts and there is no workaround.
Bonsai is clean and easy to use — a good all-in-one for freelancers billing in USD or EUR. It covers proposals, contracts, invoices, and basic time tracking. Indian freelancers who work exclusively with foreign clients and bill in USD can use Bonsai — but you'll still lack GST auto-split and TDS compliance features. At ₹1,400/month, it's hard to justify.
Dubsado is the most powerful workflow automation tool of the three — complex questionnaires, multi-step automations, and highly customisable. US-based agencies and photographers love it. Indian freelancers can technically create an account, but USD pricing, no UPI, and no Indian tax support make it a poor fit unless you bill 100% in USD.
ClearWork is built from the ground up for Indian freelancers and agencies. Every feature was designed for the Indian compliance landscape — not retrofitted after the fact.
| What HoneyBook / Bonsai / Dubsado does | What ClearWork does instead |
|---|---|
| Tax field you fill in manually | Auto-calculates CGST/SGST (intra-state) or IGST (inter-state) based on client GST number |
| Stripe payment link (not available in India) | UPI / Razorpay payment link embedded directly in invoice |
| DocuSign or basic e-sign (US law) | OTP-based e-sign valid under IT Act 2000 Second Schedule |
| Email payment reminder | WhatsApp reminder at 3, 7, 14 days overdue — sent automatically |
| $17–$20/month in USD | ₹149/month (founding price) — free plan available |
| No TDS awareness | TDS flag on invoice — shows client when 10% TDS (194J) will be deducted |
ClearWork Pricing
Based on conversations with Indian freelancers across design, development, photography, and consulting, the must-haves are consistently:
HoneyBook, Bonsai, and Dubsado satisfy zero of these. ClearWork satisfies all of them.
HoneyBook is not available in India. This is not a feature gap — it's an access block. HoneyBook's Stripe merchant account registration does not support Indian bank accounts. Indian freelancers cannot create a paid HoneyBook account that accepts payments from clients, regardless of whether those clients are Indian or foreign.
| Criteria | HoneyBook | ClearWork |
|---|---|---|
| Available in India | ✗ Not available | ✓ Yes |
| GST-compliant invoicing | ✗ | ✓ Auto CGST/SGST/IGST |
| UPI payments | ✗ | ✓ Razorpay / UPI |
| E-sign legality (India) | ✗ US law only | ✓ IT Act 2000 |
| Pricing | $19/mo (₹1,580) | ₹149/mo |
| Free plan | ✗ | ✓ No credit card |
Bonsai technically works in India — you can create an account and issue invoices. The problem is that those invoices are not GST-compliant. Bonsai has no CGST/SGST/IGST logic, no SAC code fields, and no UPI payment integration. At $17/month (₹1,400), you're paying nearly 10x ClearWork for a tool that will get you non-compliant with Indian tax law.
| Criteria | Bonsai | ClearWork |
|---|---|---|
| GST invoice (CGST/SGST) | ✗ Manual only | ✓ Auto-calculated |
| UPI payment collection | ✗ Stripe only | ✓ UPI / Razorpay |

| Pricing (INR) | ~₹1,400/mo | ₹149/mo |
| Free plan | ✗ | ✓ |
Dubsado is the most powerful of the three global tools — sophisticated workflow automations, highly customisable forms, and a strong community. For Indian freelancers, the problems are the same: no GST support, USD billing, Stripe-only payments, and no WhatsApp. Dubsado's learning curve is also steep — it takes 10–20 hours to fully set up, which is worthwhile if you're running a US-facing agency but hard to justify for most Indian freelancers.
| Criteria | Dubsado | ClearWork |
|---|---|---|

No. HoneyBook is not available in India. The platform uses Stripe as its payment processor, and Stripe merchant accounts do not support Indian bank accounts for receiving client payments. Indian freelancers cannot create a functional paid HoneyBook account.
Technically yes, but Bonsai has no GST auto-calculation. You'd need to manually calculate CGST/SGST or IGST, add it as a line item, and ensure the invoice meets Rule 46 of the CGST Rules 2017. This creates compliance risk and is far more work than using a GST-native tool like ClearWork.
HoneyBook is priced for the US market at $19/month (₹1,580). ClearWork is built and priced for India at ₹149/month — approximately 10x cheaper. ClearWork also includes India-specific features (GST, UPI, IT Act e-sign, WhatsApp) that HoneyBook doesn't have at any price.
ClearWork is the closest India-native equivalent. It covers proposals, e-sign contracts, GST invoicing, UPI payments, a client portal, and WhatsApp reminders — the same workflow as HoneyBook, rebuilt for Indian compliance and pricing.
ClearWork covers the core HoneyBook workflow: proposals, contracts, invoicing, payments, and client portal. HoneyBook has more advanced photography/wedding industry templates and questionnaire forms. ClearWork has features HoneyBook doesn't: GST auto-calculation, UPI payments, TDS tracking, and WhatsApp payment reminders.
You can export your client list from HoneyBook or Bonsai as a CSV and import it into ClearWork. Historical proposals and contracts remain in your old tool — ClearWork is used for all new work going forward. The ClearWork team also offers a free onboarding call to help you set up templates and migrate your workflow.
