By ClearWork — India's client management platform for freelancers
Bonsai is a well-designed freelancer tool — but it has no GST support, no UPI payment integration, and costs $17/month (approximately ₹1,400/month) with USD-only pricing. For Indian freelancers who need CGST/SGST/IGST auto-calculation, UPI payment links in invoices, and IT Act 2000 e-sign, ClearWork is the India-ready alternative — covering the same workflow at ₹149/month.
Bonsai does several things well: a clean, modern UI, proposals and contracts integrated with invoicing, time tracking, and basic project management. For a USD-billing freelancer working with international clients and getting paid via Stripe or PayPal, it's a solid product. The issue is specifically with India — Bonsai wasn't designed for Indian tax law or payment infrastructure.
Indian freelancers with GST registration must invoice with the correct tax split: CGST + SGST for same-state clients, IGST for clients in other states. Bonsai invoices have a generic "Tax" field — you'd need to manually calculate the right split, manually label CGST/SGST/IGST, and hope your client's GST department accepts it. This isn't compliant with Rule 46 of the CGST Rules 2017, which requires specific GST field labelling.
Bonsai processes payments through Stripe and PayPal — neither of which is how Indian clients prefer to pay. Indian clients pay via UPI (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm). Bonsai has no Razorpay or UPI integration. Your client would need to do a manual NEFT/RTGS transfer, which means chasing payment and waiting days for confirmation.
Bonsai's cheapest plan is $17/month (~₹1,400/month at current rates). ClearWork's founding Solo plan is ₹149/month — about 9x cheaper. Both cover proposals, contracts, and invoicing. For Indian freelancers, paying $17/month for software that doesn't support GST or UPI is a poor deal.
Indian freelancers who work with companies face TDS deductions under Section 194J (10%) or 194C (1–2%). Bonsai has no concept of TDS — it doesn't flag which clients will deduct it, doesn't track deductions, and doesn't adjust the net receivable amount on invoices.
Most Indian freelancers manage client communication on WhatsApp. Bonsai's reminders go by email only. ClearWork sends payment reminders automatically via WhatsApp at 3, 7, and 14 days overdue — because that's where Indian clients actually respond.
