Refrens is good for GST invoicing but has no proposals, no e-sign contracts, no CRM, and no client portal. ClearWork covers the full freelance workflow. Free plan available.
By ClearWork — India's client management platform for freelancers
Refrens is a solid free GST invoicing tool — but it stops there. If you're an Indian freelancer who also needs to send proposals, get contracts e-signed, manage a lead pipeline, and give clients a portal to access deliverables, Refrens isn't built for that. ClearWork covers the complete workflow: from lead capture → proposals → OTP e-sign contracts → GST invoices → UPI payments → WhatsApp reminders. Free plan available.
Refrens has built a strong reputation among Indian freelancers and small businesses for a reason — its free tier is genuinely useful. The GST invoice generator is accurate, handles CGST/SGST/IGST correctly, supports GSTIN lookup, and generates CA-ready PDFs. For a freelancer who just needs GST invoicing and basic billing, Refrens gets the job done without spending anything.
The Refrens free plan also includes basic expense tracking, quotations, and purchase orders — making it a reasonable accounting-lite tool for very early-stage freelancers.
Refrens has a "quotation" feature, but it doesn't track whether your client has opened it, how long they spent on each section, or send you an alert when they view it. ClearWork proposals show you real-time open events and section-level read time — so you know when to follow up without guessing.
Refrens has no contract feature. After sending a quotation, there's no way for the client to e-sign a scope document within Refrens. You'd need a separate tool (Google Docs, DocuSign, or a Word file on email) — breaking your workflow. ClearWork's proposals convert into e-sign contracts in one click, with OTP-based signing valid under the IT Act 2000.
Refrens doesn't have a lead management or CRM view. There's no way to see all your active prospects in a Kanban-style pipeline, track which deals are at proposal stage vs. contract stage vs. invoiced. ClearWork has a full lead pipeline — add a lead, move them from prospect to active to invoiced with one click.
Refrens sends invoice reminders by email. ClearWork sends them via WhatsApp — at 3, 7, and 14 days overdue — because Indian clients respond to WhatsApp, not email. You can also share the invoice directly to a WhatsApp chat with one tap.
Refrens has no shared client space. ClearWork gives every client a portal — a single link where they can view all their proposals, signed contracts, invoices, and deliverable files. No login required on the client side.
